FIELD NOTES.

N° 01 SINCE THE RITE-AID DAYS

Started as a kiosk.

For years the bench lived inside the Rite-Aid up at Grant Road Plaza — a small counter at the front of the drugstore where you'd drop off a battery while you grabbed shampoo. When Rite-Aid closed, the shop didn't go anywhere. It just moved around the corner into its own storefront in the same plaza, where it's been ever since.

N° 02 THE BENCH

Two shops in one.

Out front: a battery counter. A wall of bands. The Timex display case. Quick, friendly, $10 in and out.

Out back: a watchmaker's bench. Loupes, tweezers, tiny screws in dishes. Antique Swiss movements cleaned and oiled, regulated to spec, by the same hands that just swapped a CR2032 in a Casio. Both customers get the same respect.

N° 03 THE WATCHMAKER

A craftsman in a strip mall.

Antique Swiss watch restoration is rare in the Bay Area — usually it means shipping to a service center in another state or paying an SF luxury jeweler a luxury markup.

Here it's a guy at a bench behind the battery counter, doing it by hand, for the price he thinks is fair. Direct. Honest. He'll tell you if your piece is worth the work.
